No doubt it was the same flock that visited Alcock. Since then, I have had other reports. Virginians who have Evening Grosbeaks at their feeders are lucky. I hope the birds add our Flint Hill feeding tray to their itinerary and visit the Trotts; we have plenty of sunflower seeds.
The last time the big yellow birds were seen in my back yard was during the great blizzard of January 1996. It is during periods of extreme cold, when food sources are scarce in eastern Canada and New England, that the grosbeaks turn up in the southeast. What does this mean for us weather watchers in the upper Virginia Piedmont? I am no meteorologists and make no weather predictions.
