Put it on agenda
Residents up in arms concerning
supervisors refusal to hear them out
It has become increasingly clear in recent months
that some county citizens do not feel they are being
heard clearly by their elected representatives.
To pave or not to pave is the question. There are valid points on both sides.
The Rappahannock Board of Supervisors and others on the community have pointed out that many of the county’s roads are a problem for fire and rescue vehicles as well as school buses, farm vehicles and other types of large trucks and machinery. They are extremely concerned about the continuing problems this represents as well they should be.
Opponents of planned road work to secondary roads say that once roads are paved the speed on those roads increases and that creates a safety hazard. The Virginia Department of Transportation has figures to back them up.
No one on either side really disputes those points. However, some opponents of the county’s plans for secondary roads, specifically those people objecting to continued work on Route 621 in the StonewallHawthome District, have brought up another very valid concern.
Why can’t they get their road issue back on the agenda since, to date, VDOT has no contract for work on that remaining portion of the road even though the supervisors have approved the road work?
Seems a fair question. After all, we do live in a democracy, the supervisors are their elected representatives and they are only asking to be heard formally. They say by the time they realized what was planned for the road the work had been approved and begun.
Yes, they should have been more aware. The supervisors have said they’ve heard the arguments against continued work but feel the work is necessary.
In light of the continued opposition to the road work they should allow the issue to be put back on the agenda. After all, what will it hurt to listen?
