Bittinger uses a technique called “alia prima” which manipulates paint while it is still wet. He uses a product by Winsor and Newton called Artisan Water Mixable Oil Painting Medium that allows the oil paint to be thinned with water. The advantage in this product is that the artist does not inhale the toxic vapor from turpentine or mineral spirits.

Bittinger’s first book, “The Matzah that Papa Brought Home,” by Fran Manushkin won the American Library Associations’ Notable Children’s Book Award. “The Blue and the Gray,” by Eve Bunting won the International Readers’ Association Teachers’ Choice and the Hoosier’s Young Readers’ Award of Indiana.

He will demonstrate his technique as a still life painter on Friday, Dec. 12 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Shimmering Meadows Studio in Slate Mills,, the fee is $30, and the demo will be followed by a painting workshop this weekend. Call 547-4817 for more information.
