planned project involves “a short section with a steep grade and no shoulders. From time to time, fog, rain, snow and ice cause problems with passage. One property will be impacted because a hill will have to be moved back. We can’t flatten the grade much without affecting the entire mountain.”
Gilkey says he understands that many citizens feel frustrated with the secondary road review process. He, too, feels that frustration. “People come and go in this county,” he observed. The commuter population and weekend residents also makes it difficult to keep people informed.
“Maybe we need to make some changes in the system. Maybe posting a road that there is a meeting at such and such a time. But,” he pointed nut, “every time you solve one problem, it creates other problems. No one in this position has time to notify everyone on a road individually,” and all the other county employees already have full time jobs.
A new staff position would have to be established, affecting taxes to pay salaries. Nobody wants to pay more taxes, but additional services are not free.
