the sole purpose of immediate mass-scale extermination. The seven most notorious death camps located in occupied Poland were AuschwitzBirkenau, Belzec, Chelmno, Majdanek, Maly-Trosinets, Treblinka, and Sobibor.
Auschwitz-Birkenau was the largest of all Nazi death camps and was solely responsible for over 2,000,000 Jweish deaths during its gassing operatiosn from 1941 to 1944. Vast extensions to the camp were still being built as late as 1944 to accommodate the killing process. At Auschwitz, the normal extermination rate was 8,000 to 10,000 people per day, every day! AuschwitzBirkenau was liberated by the Russians in January 1945.
The extermination camps were scientifically designed for the purpose of mass murder. They contained large gas chambers and crematoriums. Almost 85 percent of the deportees who were sent to these camps were immediately gassed upon arrival. However, a small percentage of deportees were kept alive to be used as slaves for the Nazi war effort.
