When the presence of a predator as fast and fierce as a hungry Sharp-shinned Hawk is detected by birds at the feeder, they can either flee to the protection of a thick shrub or remain very still. Observing this strange behavior, known as freezing, can be one of the rewards of bird-feeder watching.
