Chairmen are responsible for seeing that minutes are taken and the chairmen need to report subcommittee actions to the entire school board at meetings. Crocker suggested chairmen be appointed for the subcommittees.
Minutes were accepted from a subcommittee meeting held on Nov. 19 for establishing a strategic planning and community relations subcommittee composed of Tble and Lee. Minutes were also approved for the subcommittee which met with Gangel on Nov. 25 to plan meeting with the First Focus group.
Earlier on Nov. 25, in an executive session, the board approved the minutes from the worksession in Charlottesville and Gangel’s recommendation in a pupil personnel case.
Molly Hobson, Title I remedial math teacher at Rappahannock County Elementary School and chairperson of the committee that compiled the elementary math curriculum, spoke about the RCES’s math philosophy and outline the RCES math curriculum. Hobson said she was waiting for the state to tell the school how the state’s assessment for the fifth grade will be formatted, or which S.O.L.S will be tested. She is not sure the money is available to purchase the state’s pre- and post-tests, causing the math committee to work blindly in assessment preparation.
Each strand of the curriculum in grades K-7 was discussed during a week-long session last summer, said Hobson. The primary grades are doing a fantastic job, but the upper elementary grades are presented too many skills too soon, she added. She requested a wider remedial staff since many students need daily support in math.
