Somewhere close an alert hawk, with sharp talons and a hooked beak, was perched, ready to sail out and pluck a bird from the feeder. I assumed it would be a Sharpshinned for only a small hawk — about a foot from tail to bill — would go after birds as small as a junco and chickadee.
