The U.S. Postal Service is moving forward with plans to relocate the Amissville Post Office to a larger, more customer-friendly location. The present building on the comer of Route 642, Viewtown Road, and U.S. 211 is too crowded and lacks sufficient parking, explained USPS spokesperson Helen Skillman. All 254 mail boxes are rented and the area is growing.
“The Postal Service’s goal is to provide the residents of Amissville and the community with a customer-convenient, efficient post office,” she said.
Developer Jim Epstein, of Culpep^j, who owns land at and is a driving force behind Clevenger’s Corner Development Partners, LLD, appears to be the front runner in the competition for the contract. Epstein, one of four area bidders, offered to include the new post office facility in his plan for a neotraditional village at Clevenger’s Comer. Clevenger’s Corner is located in Culpeper County at the intersection of U.S. 229 (Rixeyville Road) and U.S. 211 (Lee Highway). The Amissville Post Office is now in Rappahannock.
Jackson District Supervisor Ron Frazier said that Epstein’s ' plan would regionalize postal services for the area, combining Amissville with other small post offices. Skillman stressed, however, that the postal service is still evaluating . the proposals it received in response to the advertisements. \
They were “in the preliminary stages, setting up community meetings and getting thoughts” from the people affected. USPS will notify the Rappahannock News with the time, date and location of its public meeting.
