The brush pile near my feeder is three feet high; I started it three years ago by picking up twigs, branches and small limbs blown down by the wind and piling them in one place. This was initially the first step in removing the brush completely. After watching birds repeatedly dive into it, I decided to leave it close to the feeder and add to it from time to time.
To sum it all up, birds must feed constantly during the daylight hours to replenish energy lost during the winter nights and build up reserves for the night to come. They must also find and use a sheltered roost. It does not require much imagination to know that during very cold weather, wellstocked feeders can make the difference between survival and non-survival for the bird that has enlivened and enriched the day in visits to the feeder.
