The cooperative would provide products to a variety of related on site businesses, such as a Virginia cuisine or organic restaurant, a farmers market, handicraft, flower or wine shops, etc. All would have a “Made in Virginia” cachet that would appeal to tourists and residents alike. Other opportunities include subscription farming or group marketing of specialty crops to other establishments in the area.
“People are becoming more aware of fresh food because of the huge difference in taste,” said Epstein. They also understand that if it is to be fresh, it has to be locally grown. He personally favors organic farming as well. In Epstein’s proposal, the cooperative “becomes a linchpin for other business opportunities. No distribution system would be needed” because the produce “can be delivered directly.”
Epstein does not anticipate being personally involved in the management of the cooperative. His organization has been talking with farmers in surrounding counties about the project and wants to hear some of their ideas.
