watched no less than eight Eastern Bluebirds silently make their way into a nest box that had produced two broods of healthy young the previous summer. This was at twilight after a short and very cold winter day in January.
In orderly fashion the blue birds appeared and entered the box. The combined warmth of eight bluebirds in an enclosure is a mighty efficient way to survive when the temperature plunges to zero and below. The ornithological term for this is “huddling”; a nice, cozy word.
Carolina Wrens are especially susceptible to cold. They often venture north in search of suitable nesting habitat. When a severe winter follows, wrens are often killed by the cold and lack of sufficient food high in protein, suet for example.
