The new year did not begin happily for Howard and Julie Coon whose home off Route 626 in Castleton caught fire the morning of Jan. 1. At 9:18 a.m. the call came over the dispatch and the Castleton, Washington, Sperryville and Amissville Volunteer Fire Departments responded.
Castleton Chief John Henry Woodard was in charge of the scene. It took about a half hour to get the fire out and the fire companies spent the next two and a half hours making sure it was out.
