How do birds cope and adjust to very low temperatures? Shivering is used by a chickadee, for example, for short-term adjustment to cold. It increases a bird’s heat production while the bird is .at rest by converting muscular energy into heat. The used energy must soon be replaced. Keep the feeder full.
Some northern finches, Purple Finches and Evening Grosbeaks for example, are able to store relatively large amounts of seed in their well developed crops. This is effective in maintaining high metabolism during the night. That is why there is heavy activity at your feeder just before dark. Birds are stoking up.
