CONSCIOUS SOULS Can there be any argument to counter the idea that we humans are too conscious about ourselves and our universe to have this consciousness dissolve with our last breaths? Surely, the argument can be made that our knowledge of the world is bound up in a universal consciousness that does not observe the earthly bounds of life and death. The soul remains a constant in the face of changes imposed upon our earthbound bodies. Once our earthly ties dissolve, is there not reason to believe that our souls will be free to unite with all others? As Cicero opined, "Whatever that be which thinks, which understands, which wills, which acts, it is something celestial and divine, and on that account must necessarily be eternal." What is certainly eternal is the connection we feel to each other, especially when we lose one of our family members or loved ones. Despite the reality of the loss, it seems that our beloved is not so far or estranged, even despite the finality of death.
