In the old days some Democrats such as Henry Howell, even if you philosophically disagreed with them, had the courage of their convictions and fought for a Virginia Democratic Party that did not sound like an echo of the other major party. Given the choice, it says here that people are likely to vote for Republicans talking like Republicans rather than Democrats talking like Republicans.
