For nearly fifty years the Rappahannock Hunt’s Point-toPoint Races have been held at Thornton Hill Farm near Sperryville. Pointto-Point Race day has been eagerly anticipated—by the racers and their supporters, by townspeople and county residents whether riders or not, by visitors from near and far, by race organizers and hunt club members, and by local merchants. Jim Bill Fletcher proved an able and amenable host and Master of Foxhounds, and his farm an exciting venue, but his legacy may have been rent asunder by factionalism and infighting within the post-Jim Bill Rappahannock Hunt.
Rappahannock Hunt Point-to-Point Races in Culpeper? That does not sound like a tradition with legs. Though the Rappahannock Hunt’s territory, as authorized by the MFH Association, includes Culpeper, Madison, and Rappahannock Counties, breaking the traditional Rappahannock venue will likely harm the event, and may make a successful return to Rappahannock an uphill race. Bill Fletcher offered Thornton Hill Farm for this year’s races, but the contingents were unable to negotiate conditions between themselves in. time, and “Culpeper” insisted on the use of* the Brandywine Park facility instead.
What can we, who are not involved yet interested, expect? The Rappahannock Hunt has been split—into the “Thornton Hill” pack and the “Culpeper” pack. The “Thornton Hill” contingent maintains that
