In 1939, it was estimated that 22 ivory-billed woodpeckers were still in existence.. Today, the striking black, red and white bird has disappeared forever. No one knows when the last bird died — alone — in some north Florida swamp where the last individuals were seen.
I often think of this extinction when I see a pileated woodpecker; it reminds me of what we have lost.
