The powerful muscles and formidable bill of the large, crested and stately pileated woodpecker were once demonstrated to me on a very personal level.
I was in West Virginia in October with a group of students who had accompanied Lee Trott and me to a camp in a mountain cove. Our purpose: to capture birds in mist nets and band them as a part of our study of fall migration.
