The March 4 Rappahannock Hunt Point-to-Point have a new - possibly temporary - home. The annual event will be held at Brandywine Park south of Culpeper.
The Rappahannock races were previously held at Thornton Hill Farm in Sperryville; owner James Fletcher died last year, and the hunt could not work out the details of holding the event there in time for this spring’s point-to-point schedule.
Brandywine Park was created by the Bull Run Hunt, used for racing for the first time last year. The right-handed oval is sited at the foot of Cedar Mountain, a Civil War battlefield. Compared to the mountainous Thornton Hill course, riders and spectators will find Brandywine more typical of most of Virginia’s gently undulating steeplechase courses.
The races begin at noon with two divisions of the junior pony race to open the program. The foxhunters’ timber will include Casanova winner Rear View Mirror. Other races on the card include an owner-rider hurdle, a novice hurdle, ladies’ timber, a turf sprint (at 5/8ths of a mile) and route (at 1 1/4 miles) and a Seven Comers series owner-rider timber.
