The 2000 Bland music competition was a truly memorable success. The entire event at The Theatre on Gay Street was of course enhanced by the responsive spirit of a capacity audience on Sunday afternoon.
The friendly house was filled with young musicians, family members, music teachers and a multitude of loyal and enthusiastic friends and neighbors. It became a real community celebration, expressing more genuine appreciation of the many talented performances than at any of the previous Lions Club musical contests in recent years.
The program was more varied than usual, both in age and experience as well as in the selection of music performed and in the instruments played. In addition to the favorite piano, we enjoyed violins, cello, clarinet, saxophone and flute. There is new hope for the musical future when performers range from preschool to high school senior.
It is inspiring when the program begins with “America The Beautiful” sung in clear tones by a three-year old alto to be followed by a rendition in song of all the “Books of the Bible” sung flawlessly by another alto age four.
All of the 18 performers will receive official Lion Club Certificates of Participation. The three award winners in each of four categories were given cash prizes, $60, $40 and $25 dollars each.
