paign, raising over $1,000 for the American Heart Association. The bad weather forced us to reschedule our “Hoops for Heart” program, but finally last Friday the upper school students had an “ultimate” shoot out, taking on parents, faculty, and staff to help raise money by shooting baskets. Good fun for a good cause.
• Things are quiet this week with the students away on Winter Sports Break. We hear from Madame Diane Wood, who is accompanied by Mrs. Aney Hoehn that the children and parents who went to Quebec are having a fabulous time. Dog sledding anyone? We hope to have lots of adventures to report next week!
• So far Headmaster Michael Vargo is still alive and well at Wintergreen Resort. Mr. Vargo escorted a van full of students for four days and three nights of skiing fun, and his postcard indicates they’re all still in one piece.
• Our third grading period ended last Friday, only one more to go and 1999-2000 is history! The report card assembly will be held next week.
• On Sunday, March 12, from 1-3 p.m. the school will have an Open House. Anyone who would like to drop by is cordially invited to join us for refreshments and information.
• Once the students get back on Monday they’re off and studying. March 10 all our French students in grades 1 through 12 will be taking the National French Exam; the next week all the classical language students will be taking the National Latin and Greek Exams, and on March 7 all students in grades three through eight will take the National Mythology Exam.
• Our school community is really becoming an international one. Since Christmas we have welcomed three new students: Mehmet Yazici from Istanbul, Turkey; Wang Xi from Tianjin, China; and Amador Herraiz from Madrid, Spain.
These students are boarding with WCDS families while they study. Our student from Panama, Melissa Perez, who visited with us during her school’s vacation, left on Feb. 6. We hope she’ll come back for a longer time.
