The pileated woodpecker is a living symbol of the American wilderness, a reminder of what had been, before European axes felled the great trees. Along with the great homed owl, raven and wild turkey, the big woodpecker had been a part of limitless eastern forests. These symbols of wildness went the way of the great trees.
