Civil War reporters
The story of the men who covered the Civil War for America's leading newspapers will be the subject of author James M. Periy at the Blue Ridge Civil War Round Table meeting next week. Mr. Perry, author of A Bohemian Brigade: The Civil War Correspondents, will speak on Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the Old Sperryville Bookshop in Sperryville.
The war correspondents of the 1860s were a band of rough and ready men who traveled with the armies, took great risks and lived under harsh conditions to bring the news of the war to North and South. Frequently in conflict with Civil War commanders, they were called *"tfie buzzards of the press" by Union Gen. William T. Sherman. The Civil War was the first "instant-news war," made possible by the invention of the telegraph, and these correspondents helped define a new kind of reporting which had great impact.
The speaker is himself a longtime journalist, having been a Washington-based" political writer for The National Observer and The Wall Street Journal. Nonmembers of the Round Table should call 987-8444 to reserve a place at the meeting.
