The volunteers, he said, were either unsuccessful in negotiating the road or were unable to find the fire, and returned without having fought it. Mr. Raeburn said that he was not displeased that they could not attack the fire, because they returned safely. "We've lost over 400 wildland firefighters since 1950," he said, and noted that the primary concern of park personnel is and has always been the protection of human life-"There is nothing on the mountain ... in the park . . . that is worth losing a life over."
Significant progress has been made in fighting the fire, according to Mr. Raeburn and incident information officer Claire Comer. As of Tuesday evening the fire was considered more than 60 percent contained, and it was expected that a line around the entire fire should be in place before morning on Nov. 8. Once this
