Bush beats Gore in
the Commonwealth By Dominic Bonaiuto Rappahannock News Staff Writer Republican George W. Bush won Virginia's vote for president handily Tuesday, as expected. The Texas governor was leading Vice President A1 Gore (D) 53 percent to 45 percent with 55 percent of the state's precincts reporting at the Rappahannock News deadline. Green Party candidate Ralph Nader had won 2 percent at that point. Virginia has long been considered safe territory for Bush with Gov. James Gilmore (R) serving as a close adviser to his Tfexas counterpart and as state chairman of the Bush campaign.
