tight Senate race By Dominic Bonaiuto Rappahannock News Staff Writer Republican George F. Allen toppled Virginia’s last statewide-elected Democrat Tuesday, scoring a stunning victory over twoterm U.S. Sen. Charles S. Robb of McLean. Allen, who led in every statewide poll leading up to election day, withstood a late charge from Robb to solidify the GOP’s control of the Old Dominion despite heavy Democratic turnout in Northern Virginia. “I want to thank God for this election,” Allen i told a packed crowd in Richmond Tuesday night. “We reached out to Virginians and we want to unite Virginians.” With 74 percent of statewide precincts reporting at the Rappahannock News deadline, Allen had won 53 percent of the vote to Robb’s 47 percent.
