It was the final week of the regular season and the Lady Panthers were matched up with two teams tied for first place. On Tuesday, Oct. 31 the Rapp squad traveled to George Mason to pair up against the Lady Mustangs. It was one heck of a game as the Lady Panthers showed the girls from George Mason they were no ordinary sixth place team.
The two teams were pretty evenly matched in the first half and traded baskets up until the horn sounded for intermission. The Lady Panthers went into the break with a 25-22 half time lead.
Amanda Weakley had a terrific first half and lead all scorers with 12 points. The third quarter caught the Rapp girls on their heels as they just couldn't seem to buy a basket. The George Mason girls showed why they were leading the District and broke the game open with a 26-9 scoring edge that put them on top 4834 at the end of the third quarter. But, the Lady Panthers showed they had heart and fought back with an 18 point fourth quarter that fell just short. When the game ended it was George Mason 59 and RCHS 53.
Gwen Johnson put on a fourth quarter show that made a case for her being on the All-District first team five. She scored 15 of her game high 21 points in the final quarter, including sinking three 3-pointers.
On Thursday night, the Lady Panthers faced the Lady Rams from Strasburg at home. It was another hard fought, tough defensive game as the Strasburg girls were battling for first place in the District and the Rapp squad was playing their season finale in front of their home crowd. The home court advantage was not enough and the Lady Panthers fell short in their final home game, losing to Strasburg by a score of 45-34.
Juniors Gwen Johnson led the Lady Panthers with 12 points and Amanda Weakley added 11. After the contest, Coach Mike Dayton said, "It was a great week of basketball. The girls showed that they could play and belonged on the court with the best teams in the District. I believe we re peaking as a team at the right time with the District tournament commencing next week. Hopefully, we can capture a big win in the quarter final match-ups next Tuesday.”
