He reported that he was attempting to have three local universities send representatives to the School Board meeting of Nov. 28 to discuss entrance criteria, and that the dedication of the new wing of the high school was tentatively scheduled for Nov. 30.
Other activities
• The Board received an update on the County's secondary road improvement activities from VDOT's Bob Moore, and held a public hearing on the six year plan. Mr. Moore said that, as a result of information received, VDOT will develop an updated draft six year plan and will present it to the Board at their December or January meeting.
• Mr. McCarthy reported that a donation of some $34,000 had been received from the Cole Family Foundation to be used to equip sheriffs deputy cruisers with portable defibrillators.
• At the public comments portion of the afternoon session, Joy Sloane thanked Mr. McCarthy for his assistance in disseminating information about the Park fire. The information provided by Mr. McCarthy, she said, "makes a rather scary proposition less frightening."
• Mr. McCarthy reported that Crawford Fencing had submitted an acceptable bid of $23,750 for ball field fencing, and the Board accepted the bid.
• The Board okayed a new signage for the Town of Amissville, provided the AACA agrees to maintain it.
• The Board reappointed Roberta Anderson to the Rappahannock-Rapidan Community Services Board, and praised her efforts to date.
• The Board considered and approved amendments to the Consumer Utility Tax Ordinance that were necessitated by changes in State code, and are "revenue neutral".
• The Board considered and approved amendments to the Zoning Chapter of the County Code, most of which were necessary as the result of new State requirements or "housekeeping" needs. The sole exception was a change to the Family Apartments section that provided a definition of "family" as "ancestors, descendants, or siblings”.
