Other activities
• Mr. McCarthy provided an update on the CREP program in Rappahannock County. This Federal-State program provides landowners with funding to develop riparian buffers that protect rivers from damage and pollution caused by livestock. He noted that Rappahannock County has 251 acres enrolled in the program—the fifth highest acreage in the State.
• The Board heard from Mr. McCarthy and Sheriff Larry Sherertz regarding the recent audit of the County Jail by the State Department of Corrections. Mr. McCarthy noted that audits that result in findings of high per diem costs by the Department of Corrections are often precursors to the closing of a county jail, and the audit of the Rappahannock facility did result in such finds.
Sheriff Sherertz noted however, that in his discussions with the Fauquier County Sheriff and controller, they noted errors in the audit that would remove the actual per diem costs from the “high” level.
