On April 13 at 8 p.m., the Friday Library Series sponsored by the Rappahannock Association for the Arts and the Community will feature Rappahannock resident Colonel John R. Bourgeois, retired Director of “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band.
During the past year, Col. Bourgeois has received two major national music awards. In August of 2000, Col. Bourgeois was named the American Man of Music for 20002003 by the national music fraternity Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, joining the ranks of musicians like composer Aaron Copeland and National Symphony conductor Leonard Slatkin, who were past recipients of the same award.
In February 2001, Col. Bourgeois was inducted into the National Band Hall of Fame, to become one of only fqur Marine Band directors so honored, the first of whom being John Philip Sousa. , * These honors reflect 38 years of service in the Marine Band as a French hornist and an arranger, including 17 years as its Director.
