If the female cowbird chooses carefully, and finds the nest of one of the over 200 “host” species that either cannot tell the difference between their own egg and the cowbirds, she has succeeded.
Female cowbirds are like other birds and can only lay one egg per day. Each morning the female cowbird finds a host nest and waits for the host mother to lay her one egg for the day. When the host mother
leaves, she flies in quickly and in

extra egg. Most of the time she just leaves her egg and moves on. This goes on for up to ten days, with the average about five to seven days.
The cowbird egg has a large yolk that allows the egg to develop faster and hatch up to two days before its adopted siblings. This is important in the cowbird survival strategy.
