Oil paintings by Rappahannock artist Steven Kenny will be the subject of an exhibition at Gallery K in Washington, D.C. Although Mr. Kenny has participated in group shows at Gallery K and Fraser Gallery in Georgetown, this is his debut solo ejdiibit in the city.
The portraits and still lifes that make up the show are rendered in the artist’s trademark surreal style. At first glance reminiscent of 17 century Dutch paintings, Mr. Kenny’s detailed compositions reveal surprising, unusual combinations of plants, animals, insects, and humans. His portraits depict figures clad in living garments gathered from the environments they inhabit.
The still lifes are not “still” at all but arrangements of living organisms. Birds, mice, turtles, frogs, and other wild acrobats maintain a delicate balance, one on top of another. Our contrived laws of nature
