The Rappahannock Relay for Life is just a little more than one week away but its organizers already know that they can claim success. It is not just that they are prepared-and they are that.
It is also that there are more than thirty teams of 8 to 15 people signed up to participate in the relay. These teams (and it is not too late to add a team) and their efforts mean that Rappahannock County will again be making a significant financial contribution to the fight against cancer.
The Relay will be held at the Rappahannock Elementary School on May 1819. The pre-Relay activities begin with registration and campsite set-up at 5 p.m. A musical prelude played by the Rappahannock County School Band will begin at 6:40 p.m. Welcome ceremonies begin at 7 p.m. The Relay itself will begin after the Survivor’s Ceremony at 7:20 p.m. with the Survivor’s Lap. All cancer survivors are urged to participate in this part of the Relay. Cancer survivors may register with Carolyn Leake at 6352073 or at the event.
Following the Survivor’s Lap, walkers from teams continue the Relay throughout the night and other team members enjoy the activities, or sleep, or rest at their camp sites. At dark, the Relay track will be lit by luminaries in honor or memory of both cancer victims and cancer survivors. Luminaries may be purchased for $5 each from Jennifer Manly, RO. Box 608, Flint Hill, VA 22627 or at the event.
Tradition requires that Rappahannock County events that last more than one hour must have food. So the Relay features a picnic beginning at 7:30 p.m., a Midnight
