Team (made up of’6th. 7th and 8th grade boys) kicked off the first ever game, and their first season game on Monday, April .30 with an impressive win over Cedar Lee Middle School. The Jr. Panthers started slowly against the Trojans giving up a goal in the opening moments of play. The Panther defense, centered around 8th grader Dustin Torrence, settled quickly and began doing its' job - shutting down the Cedar Lee team and serving balls to an attacking offense. The Trojans, whose average height appeared to be about a foot taller than the Rappahannock Junior Panthers, were soon back on their heels. Play remained on the Cedar Lee defensive side of the field for much of the game. The much smaller Jr. Panthers played a smart, simple possession game that was too much for the Trojans. The quick, skilled play of the JP’s delighted the hometown fans and Head Coach Kenny Rodgers. After tying the score, then pulling ahead by first one, and then two goals, the Jr. Panthers never let Cedar Lee back in the game.
When it was over the crowd had been treated to a 3-1 opening game victory and an impressive effort by the young squad. Junior Panther goals were scored by 6th grader Carlos Flores, 7th grader Alex Ramey and 8th grader James Jackson. The boys play a return contest at Cedar Lee on Monday, May 7.
