The JV squad traveled to Strasburg to play a tough, second place JV Lady Ram team. It was a great game and went into the 7th inning with the JV Panthers on top 4-2. Some Strasburg hits, some Rapp errors and the lead vanished - the JV girls had just lost their first District game 5-4. Now both teams are 6 and 1 and seemed destined to run into one another in the JV District Championship game on May 23.
Baseball
On Tuesday, May 1 the Panther varsity traveled to George Mason hoping to earn their first victory of the season over the winless Mustangs. But, it was not to be on this night. Senior Mark Wharton started for the Panthers and pitched well for a couple of innings before the defense collapsed with four infield errors in the third inning. The Mustangs gained an 8-3 lead by the middle of the game and held on to win by the same score.
The JV Panther played at home against the JV squad from George Mason. Freshman Josh Werner threw 3 and 2/3 innings and sophomore Ryan Brown threw 1 and 1/3. The JV Mustangs had their hitting shoes on and hit the ball hard, collecting nine hits over the five inning game. The JV Panthers had five hits spread out and never really got anything going. They lost to the JV squad from GM by the score of 12-1.
On Wednesday, May 2 the Junior Varsity team had to make-up a rained out game here at home with the JV team from Manassas Park. Sophomore Noah Starks got the nod for Coach Tupper’s squad and he promptly responded by pitching a 5-inning no-hitter. Mixing curves and fastballs, he kept the JV Cougars off balance at the plate. The Panther defense sensed the effort and responded with solid defense behind their young Ace. Starks finished the game with four strikeouts and the JV Panthers picked up their third Bull Run District win against five losses with the 16-0 victory.
On Friday, May 4 the Varsity squared off at home against the District leading, Strasburg Rams. Head Coach Donn Hackney started junior Jamie Keys to see if the hard throwing, right hander could tame the Strasburg bats. The boys from the valley showed why they’re occupying the number one spot in the Bull Run District. The Rams hit everything Keys threw at them for three innings. He was replaced by Wharton, but with the same result. Junior Jeff Ritenour’s play in the outfield was superb, but outfield defense wouldn’t decide this game. When the fifth inning ended, the Rams were leaving town with a 16-3 victory and the Panthers had just lost their 10th consecutive game.
The JV squad had traveled to Strasburg that same day to finish their home and away series with the JV Rams. The Straburg JV Baseball team also occupies first place in the junior varsity ranks, so the Panthers had their work cut out for them.
