There were no record setting performances this week by Panther athletes, but the team action remained hot and heavy. On Tuesday, May 1 the boys’ soccer team traveled to George Mason to seek revenge on the only team to beat them this year. By the end of the week, with some help from the Madison Mountaineers, who knocked off the Brentsville Tigers, our boys’ soccer team saw themselves elevated to first-place in the District, with a chance to control their own destiny in the playoffs.
The girls’ varsity softball team also remained in the thick of the hunt for high seeding during the playoffs. They played a pair, and won a pair to keep pace with the second place, Lady Tigers of Brentsville. The baseball teams are still struggling and the track team moves closer to the District Tournament with a chance for some young “hotshots” to show their stuff.
Softball
It wasn’t always pretty this past week, but when it was over the Varsity Lady Panthers had won decisively two more Bull Run District contests. On Tuesday, May 1 the RCHS Iham traveled to George Mason to play the winless, Lady Mustangs. Junior Gwen Johnson pitched for the Panthers and shut the George Mason squad down with only ene hit during the slaughterrule shortened, 6-inning game.
Johnson also collected the first team home run of the season - a solid shot that cleared the left fielders’ head. Freshman Ryisha Cook called up from the JV squad to fill a fcap in the outfield, had a fine night going three for five at the dish with two RBI’s and two stolen bases. When the game ended the Rapp squad had pretty much dismantled the Lady Mustangs by the score of 17-1.
The JV was at home applying the same recipe to the visiting JV Lady Mustangs. The Panther girls manhandled their guests and the game was called after three innings with the Rapp squad on top 16-0. Wednesday, May 2, the JV girls had a make-up game here when they hosted the visiting JV girls from Manassas Park. Freshman Brittany Thornhill got her first start, since coming off injured reserve following orthoscopic surgery to her left knee. After falling behind 6-0, the JV Panthers fought back, took the lead, and let Freshman Ace, Lara Kreyling close the door and secure the victory.
On Friday, May 4 the girls got set to battle the Lady Rams of Strasburg. The varsity played home and sophomore Ace, Rachel Sharp got the start. She gave up three hits over five innings and stepped aside for junior Gwen Johnson, who came in to mop up the last two. Some shaky fielding in the second and fifth innings, gave the Lady Rams three unearned runs, but the contest was never in doubt. The Lady Panthers collected 11 hits off two Strasburg pitchers and had the ball in play all night, striking out only twice. The game ended with another Panther victory 7-3.
