Just a reminder that Sunday, June 17 is Father’s Day. This is the day of commemoration and celebration for all the Dads. It is not only to honor the fathers, but in this modem day, all who have acted as fathers in your life. Whether they be stepfathers, uncles, grandfathers, or big brothers, who ever has been the father figure.
Mrs. John B. Dodd of Spokane, Washington was the first to propose the idea of “Fathers’ Day” in 1909. She wanted to honor her father on a special day. William Smart was a Civil War veteran when his wife died in child birth, leaving him with a newborn and five other children to raise.
When Mrs. Dodd became an adult she realized the strength and selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent. This is also true today with both parents.
The first Father’s Day was observed on June 19, 1910 in Spokane, Washington. Other town and. cities across America were beginning to celebrate Father’s Day. In 1924 President Calvin Collidge supported the idea of a national Father’s Day.
In 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day.
