the Freedom Foundation at Valley Forge with the 24th Annual Leavey Award for Excellence in Private Enterprise Education.
• The School Board meeting opened with a moment of silence and a memorial to custodian Shelby Atkins by Jack Raines. Mr. Raines characterized Shelby Atkins as a man with a strong work ethic and personal pride, and who “owned” the high school building and maintained it as if it were his.
• Peter Hughes from the Governor’s Best Practice Center provided in service to the School Board on the use of SOL test data disaggregation to aid in improving SOL test performance, and the concept and approach to mastery learning.
• Board member Rosa Crocker urged community members to volunteer for the Citizen’s Committee to Study Alternative School Funding. Interested individuals should contact their Supervisor to offer their participation.
• Phillip Thomas introduced himself to the Board as the newly elected Student Representative to the School Board for 2001-2002.
• Chairman Mills read a thank you card from the State Softball Champion Lady Panthers for the air conditioned bus provided for the championship rounds, and for the welcome home celebration.
• Assistant Superintendent Helen Williams presented the Board with the 5-year Gifted Student Plan and with the Annual Special Education Plan. The Board approved both plans unanimously.
• Mr. Raines reported that there are four open teaching positions for the coming year: special education, speech, middle school math, and chemistry.
