They will play music for viol consorts by some of the most important composers of the day, including Henry Purcell (1659-1695).
The instrumentalists will be joined by English soprano Amanda Balestrieri, whose appearances at The Theatre have been a consistent source of delight to audiences here.
She performs regularly to high critical acclaim throughout the U.S. and has sung under conductors Neville Marriner, Christopher Hogwood and Leonard Slatkin. She has sung with the National Symphony Orchestra and has broadcast on the National Pnblic Radio program “Performance Tbday”.
Ms. Balestrieri will be featured in a group of consort songs by the great Elizabethan composer William Byrd (1543-1623) and will also perform a group of works by anonymous contemporaries of Byrd.
She will be joined by four other singers for the final work on the program, Orlando Gibbons’s “The Cryes of London,” in which the viol consort is “accompanied” by the sounds of vendors hawking wares ranging from “new mussels,” “fine white cabbage,” and “very fine writing ink,” to the services of ferrymen and chimney sweeps.
Tickets for the concert on March 1 are $15 for adults; $10 for college students; and $5 for students 18 and under.
