While he believes war is a “last ditch effort,” the country’s leaders have the right motives.
“I don’t believe anyone in the White House or the Pentagon $ants to go to war,” he said. “1 think they are all honest Godfearing citizens who are trying to guide us in the best national interest. ... I don’t believe Saddam Hussein would have made concessions without the threat of force by the U.S.
Admittedly a “changed man” who has found a new peace, Warren reflected on the spiritual life of his younger days.
“I separated myself from religion ... as if I were purposefully separating myself from faith,” he said. “It was a veiy big mistake, but it’s a common mistake that young people make. Once you do that you’re not inclined to look back and admit you made a mistake.
“I do believe that God was waiting for me to remember that He was in charge and not me. People need to know that they are a part of something that is beyond the temporary life we lead — that is transcendent and has a purpose.”
Warren gave his first sermon at his church in Middleburg two weeks ago. After graduation next year, he hopes to work with his parish as a mentor or counselor. This summer he plans to travel to Tanzania and Malawi to visit two fellow students who are priests in Africa.
“I feel the need to get over there and somehow support them,” said Warren. “In the long term ... I want to help my church in whatever way I can to show more people that there is a better way of life. ... There are a lot of troubled people who are suffering and perhaps don’t know why.
“I’m fascinated with missionary work, talking to people about their spiritual life, and where they are going. That is something that is very comforting to me. Perhaps that is something I can do.”
