By Donna Fisher Special to the Rappahannock News Bom in the small community of Mt. Salem, just outside of Washington, Anna was one of the 10 children of John and Tabitha Smith Williams. She attended Mt. Salem Graded School which stood on what is now Long Mountain Road. This was initially known as Berean Baptist Church and was also used as a school for the blacks in the area. The building is no longer standing. “How do you judge a tree?” When Anna Green often asked this question of her
students, they knew the answer to be: “By the fruit it bears.” When Berean Baptist Church closed in the 1920s, the remaining membership transferred to the First Baptist Church in Washington.
