By contrast, I attended the anti-war protest rally and march of 250,000 on the Mall and in the streets of Washington, D.C. last month. This peaceful event came off without a hitch.
By the end of the day, Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly and his massive police force arrested about 300 protesters for minor violations. It was more than a little bit obvious, “the big apple” wants you to spend your bucks around Times Square, but don’t come io town to protest an unjust war.
But perhaps this was standard operating procedure for law and order in Gotham City in these days of post 9/11 terrorist alerts, the Patriot and Homeland Security Acts and a new office called the Total Information Agency.
It should be noted that NY,NY did not want this rally in the first place and over reacted accordingly. Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s office was willing to issue a permit for the rally, but not for a requested march to UN Plaza.
The city would not even allow the event sponsors to place portable toilets around the rally site for fear of being “a security risk.”
The NYPD had a degrading way of containing the protesters located on First Avenue. Block by block people were herded into “cattle-pen like metal fences” closed and guarded by police. Had a stampede ensued for some odd reason, Women, children, handicapped, the elderly and more would have been trampled to the asphalt and seriously injured or crushed to death unnecessarily in the
