The Virginia Angus Association recently gave this tribute to Rappahannock resident Newbill Miller at a dinner in his honor. Robert Grove of Summerville, Va., who is a member of the Board of Directors, spoke on its behalf as the group honored Mr. Miller with two awards.
Webster’s defines “gentleman” as “a man of courtesy, honor, and integrity, having worthy ideals and high standards for correct behavior.”
And while this definition accurately describes Newbill Miller, to more fully understand Newbill we need to discuss the passions of his life — his family, his community, and Angus cattle.
No family and community are as intertwined as the Miller family and Rappahannock County. The county is now home to nine generations of the Miller family, and the last four of those generations were and are Angus breeders.
Newbill has served his community as a member of the Planning Commission, as a member of the County Board of Supervisors, as Chairman of the Board of Supervisors (Newbill is credited with being the architect of the county’s Comprehensive Zoning Plan), as Mayor of Washington, as Chief of the Volunteer Fire Department, as a member of the Board at the Rappahannock National Bank, and as a real estate broker.
To see Newbill and his wife Carol swell with pride when discussing their family — especially their nine grandchildren — is to understand their complete devotion to family. And Newbill’s love of Angus cattle led him to serve his fellow Virginia Angus breeders by serving on the VAA Board of Directors, and by serving as President of the Board in 1978.
I know of no map who loves the art of breeding superior cattle more than Newbill. Newbill is an independent thinker who followed one golden rule — that the purpose of the purebred breeder is to produce superior bulls for the commercial cowman.
