Micro-climate is another clue to timing success. Tbps of sunny southern slopes, especially in a sheltered spot, will induce plants to sprout and bloom several weeks ahead of plants in lower, shadier, windier or northern placements. It is good to consider this in drawing up sowing or transplanting plans, and to reserve warmer garden areas for plants you desire to eat or see flowering a bit earlier.
One more note on timing: there’s nothing like that little voice of intuition that slips in with the urging to plant something just now or hold off on something else. Last year gave a good example of this kind of serendipity to me. Though warm weather had been established quite well, and we were past the frost-free date for our area, a series of frosts hit from May 20-22, killing off lots of tomatoes and tender plants in the area.
I had been quite late, in comparison to previous years, in planting any tender summer crops. It wasn’t a bird, weed or calendar that advised me so — it was a feeling of reluctance, resistance even, which stayed my hand.
