“I worked as a spokesperson for a president, and it’s impossible to not be placed in a position ... that perhaps you don’t believe — that’s your job,” he said. “It was the same thing as an editor. I was in effect the spokesperson for the publisher.”
Warren explained that he supported Nixon’s removal of troops from Vietnam in the early 1970s, but not the militaiy’s concurrent bombings of Cambodia.
“In my heart there was some tension there,” he said. “Unless you speak for yourself... you will always be put in the position where you’ll be in conflict with your own beliefs.”
Warren said recent protests against a war in Iraq are similar to those during the Vietnam conflict, and religious leaders who participate in them should work together to find solutions
