These are as important to me as noting, the dates seeds were started, plants set out and crops harvested. Comments on what worked well and what didn’t help to round out the picture. Even after two years of collecting this data, for example, you will be able to see some patterns emerging. With that comes a general knowledge of when to start the first lettuces or beans, and when to plant the broccoli to avoid the heaviest cabbage loper damage.
Plotting out or finding a graph of how long plants take to germinate and grow large enough to pick is another bit of information you’ll find necessary. Simply having an awareness that lettuce (if given protection) can be planted out in March and be ready to eat in early April will lead you to the next step: count back the number of days to approximate maturity for a guideline of when to sow the seeds.
Adding the refinement of moon cycle favorability will further enhance the intelligent calculations. The biodynamic Stella Nature calendar, with its delineated “leaf”, “flower”,"root” and “fruit” days works very well, though some people may prefer the somewhat different guidelines in the Farmer’s Almanac.
In the moon cycle timing, certain plant categories have affinities with the specific cycles of the moon and are best planted, harvested or pruned with those influences in mind. Tb be avoided are nodes, eclipse and perigee aspects, all unfavorable, even detrimental to cultivation efforts.
