Cath Thomas, a 34-year-old resident of King George, was in the House chamber when the bill was defeated. She was stunned by the vote. “It’s unfortunate that these delegates didn’t have the courage and keep the original majority vote,” Thomas said, choking back tears and shaking from anger. “This bill would have saved thousands of lives, especially young lives in our commonwealth’s highways. I think it’s a great loss, and I think that if any of them lost their children, friends or members of their family from accident for not wearing a seatbelt, they would have voted yes without hesitation.” Thomas has been a quadriplegic since she was 16, when she was injured in an automobile accident in which she was not wearing a seatbelt. She testified in favor of the bills. Thomas will continue to fight for the bill’s passage next year. She has been public speaking for 17 years at schools.
