According to Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Asbury “Ab” Quillian, the Virginia DMV didn’t become one of the best in the nation overnight, and bringing it back to the level to which we were accustomed won’t happen overnight, either. Central to the recovery is the re-opening of most of the 12 local DMV offices — including the one in Warrenton — that were shut down last October as part of Gov. Mark Warner’s effort to cut state government spending. Quillian expects that when the Fauquier DMV — where many people from Rappahannock were regular patrons -r- reopens on Thursday, a significant number of people who have been postponing their business with the DMV will show up. We can expect that there will be lines, and Quillian asks that we please be patient. Still facing reduced funding, DMV executives have had to look at ways to cut costs, including downgrading some full-service facilities with “express” offices, which should be sufficient. And because they were forced to do so, many DMV customers have learned how to renew their licenses and auto registrations over the telephone and Internet. Quillian compared last year’s DMV office closings to the destruction of a house by a hurricane, “You are determined to rebuild, but you know it will be different from the old house,” he said. “And hopefully better.”
