Cycle of life
The Fall Steeplechase 2003 cover depicts the cyde of a successful steeplechaser, from birth to the winner’s circle. Shown are three members of a championship family. Prominent, in jumping and flat racing shots, is Virginia champion hurdler and timber star Ponsonby, bred in Virginia by the late Col. Robert O'Brien and currently owned and trained by Don Yovanovich. Shown as a 2-year-old at a schooling horse show is Ponsonby’s younger sister by Chenin Blanc. Horse shows and foxhunting are popular with area horsemen to “make' young horses, showing them lhat every time in the horse van doesn’t have to mean the excitement of the racetrack. Sometimes, the shows dearty prove, horsing around is just for fun. Shown as a 2-day-old suckfing is the Chenin Blanc mare’s Rock Point colt, also Virginia-bred. Early harxfing to make “an equine good citizen* gives young horses a head-start towards success. Though there is plenty of anecdotal evidence that previously wild youngsters can be successful — a la adopted mustangs or wooly herds of weanfings brought in from back pastures for handfrig as yearfings — horsemen agree that a sold foundation makes for an easier beginning.
